Glad we played it. Would play again.
Amanda here, reviewing the trading card game, Disney Lorcana- I’d give it four coins out of six- check out why below.
Is It Worth It?
Disney Lorcana is a card game that combines the magic of Disney with the fun of a card game, with the added twist of also being trading cards. This game is easy to learn- my 11 year old daughter picked it up quickly. It’s whimsical with all the different characters, but the ease of play makes it enjoyable across ages and groups. I wouldn’t recommend this to players who don’t like reading, or those that find multiple steps in one turn to be difficult. If you’re a fan of Magic: The Gathering, you’ll understand the mechanics and gameplay in a jiffy. I’m not a fan of Magic, but I sure enjoyed this game and couldn’t wait to play again.
What Are You Actually Doing?
The easiest way to play Lorcana is to start with a pre-made card deck that contains characters, items, songs, lands, and actions. The goal is to earn 20 ink before the other person- why ink? Because it’s Disney and characters are drawn, of course! You want to strategize to get yourself up to 20 ink while also preventing the other player from getting there through defeating cards that help earn them ink. It’s whimsical but strategic all at the same time and tickles the Disney-loving itch in my brain!
The Loot
Lorcana earns a solid four gold coins because it’s a fun game, even when losing. It took quite a few games for me to finally win, but I enjoyed every single one. It’s easy enough to learn that younger teens can do it, but if you put in the time and effort of building your own deck, you can make it far more complicated and strategic.
The Good Stuff
Easy to learn- each deck comes with a playing mat and coins for tracking
Artwork is beautifully done
Disney-lovers will love the foil cards and special powers of characters
Has an app for easier ink tracking
Customizable- can make own decks and play with card combinations if that’s your thing
The Catch
It is a TCG game, so think along the lines of Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, and other trading card games.
If you’re not a Disney fan, it may be less appealing to you if you’re a serious TCG player.
The game says it’s best as a two player game, but can do a 2v2 if wanted. That means it’s not meant for more than 4 players at a time.
This Game Is Calling To…
Strategy players
Fans of Magic mechanics
Disney fans
Would We Play This Again?
I’ve already played it a bunch of times and taught both of my kids so I have more people to join me! We started with two starter decks and quickly bought more- unwrapping the packs is a lot of fun. This is a card game worth trying!
